Clearwater, Florida is situated west of Tampa on the gulf coast in Pinellas County. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, the first Spanish explorer set foot on the shore of what is today Clearwater in 1528. The explorer, Panfilo de Narvaez discovered the inhabitants referred to the area as “Pocotopsug” or “clear water” because of the clear water springs that bubbled along the bluffs above shoreline at that time. The natives ran the Spanish out of the area, and no settlers returned until the 1800’s. While first incorporated in 1891, Clearwater did not become incorporated, as the city it is today until 1915 with a population of 1000 residents. Today Clearwater is home to over 100,000 people, and that number continues to grow.
